Teaching Math to Kids
For my Community Engagement pillar, I spent three days a week teaching math at Buckingham Brown & Nichols' Lower School. I worked with Ms. Swarm, a teacher who goes around to different classrooms to help homeroom teachers with math classes. I worked with two 3rd grade classes and one 4th grade class, running game stations and answering questions about their worksheets.
I facilitated this game with two 3rd grade classes. In groups of two, kids must spin a spinner on the wheel of numbers. Depending on the number they land on, they must find an equation on the sheet that's quotient is equal to their number. They have to make rows of four and three to score points. By playing this game, kids are practicing their division skills in a fun and interactive game.
In this game, 3rd students are given the sheet shown below, and a handful of bingo chips. They each put a chip on one of the grey numbers. The player going first has to multiply the two numbers and put another bingo chip on the product (these students decided to circle instead). The game ends once one player makes a row of 4.
The fourth grade classes use these playing cards for various games, and over time the decks have gotten scrambled. I spent roughly 5 hours resorting over 30 decks. Each deck needed 4 of each card, the cards being 0-10 and wildcards. Even though this task was isolating and a bit boring, it was one of my favorite parts of the internship.
